ENGINEERING & PRODUCING
Phil is experienced in all types of classical recording
sessions and environments, whether recording soloists, small chamber ensembles, large-scale orchestras, or
full operatic productions. Phil works both as an engineer and a producer.
SESSION VIDEO
Phil has a number of HD cameras which can be set up on sessions to be used for promotional purposes.
The different shots can be cut together afterwards abd the results can be quite fun.
See some examples here.
EDITING AND POST-PRODUCTION
Phil is an extremely experienced
classical editor and can work either to a pre-ordained 'edit-plot' or can apply his own musical and production
sensibilities in selecting which takes to use. The editing can be done in normal stereo or multi-track. Phil uses
the latest
SADiE hard-disk editor (although he is also experienced with other systems) and can edit in PCM or DSD, enabling him to
produce SACD masters. Phil also has Pro Tools and Pyramix Native.

It has recently been announced that one of Phil's recent SACD recordings (Mussorgsky/Stokowski transcriptions) has
been nominated for
Best Surround-Sound Album for the 2006 GRAMMY awards.
He has also edited one of this year's GRAMMY nominations for
Best Classical Album (William Bolcom's 'Songs of Innocence and Experience'),
Best Choral Performance ('Songs of Innocence and Experience'), and
Best Orchestral Performance (Mussorgsky/Stokowski transcriptions).
MASTERING & RESTORATION
Full mastering and post-production services are available, including restoration of very old (or archive) recordings,
using a wide range of different noise reduction and elimination techniques. Phil mostly uses the industry-standard
CEDAR tools and takes great care to prevent any unwanted audible artifacts in the finished master.
Phil remastered the famous Solti recordings of Strauss' complete operas, and the classic Britten/Pears
recording of The War Requiem for Decca. These re-issues were made from the original analogue tape recordings,
transferred digitally at 96kHz 24 bit.
